1. Have passed all previous levels.
2. Perform USDF Intro Dressage test A with a score of 50% or better
Test may be read for student. Test will be judged using USDF guidelines for horse and rider, including
accuracy of movements, quality of gaits, riders seat and hands and use of the aids
3. Demonstrate ability to trot around the outside of the ring posting without stirrups
Minimal loss of correct balance and position as well as ability to control the horse will be required
for this exercise.
4. Jump a simple course of 12-inch cross rails at the trot, cantering only between jumps, not around corners
Rider will be asked to demonstrate correct position both in between the fences (posting or jumping position) and
over the fences (jumping position).
Student should also demonstrate ability to control horses pace and straightness, well as correct use of the corners.
5. Ride outside the ring at the walk weather permitting without assistance*
Student must show ability to control mount and explain basic safety rules for riding outside the ring, and be
able to apply most of them.
6. Explain the half halt and show a half halt at the walk trot and canter
The half halt is a ‘call to attention’ for the horse. The aids for the basic half halt are stretch your
body tall, pushing your chest open, stretch your leg long from your hip, tighten your leg
around the horse without getting tense, close your fingers on the reins, and ask the horse to rebalance.
7. Canter around the ring in each direction on the correct lead
Student should show a basic understanding of their horses balance both on the long side and in the corner.
Rider will also be asked to ‘rate’ the horse’s canter, asking the horse to slow or go more forward as
needed. This exercise should be done with a minimal lose of rider position.
8. Apply boots and polo wraps
Student will be asked to demonstrate correct application of boots and polo wraps
9. Thoroughly clean a bridle
Student should be able to thoroughly clean a bridle, including taking it apart and putting it back together properly.
*without assistance - student and horse are safe with minimal watching by assistant, and student is able to do all that is necessary.
